This is going to be a short post this week with just one focal point: who do you listen to? I mean, what teachers, mentors, guides really resonate with you?
I want to share with you those who have been instrumental in shaping my view of spiritual matters as well as business ones. Maybe you’ll see some familiar faces, maybe you’ll see some new ones.
The very first person I listened to in-depth was Dr. Wayne Dyer. Goodness, I inhaled all his material early on. I even went to see him speak and marveled at how he could just talk about these complicated topics off the top of his head. The most important bit of advice I got from Dr. Dyer? “Detach from the outcome.” (hard to do, let me tell you!)
That led me to a woman I consider the Mother Superior of the Woo and that’s Caroline Myss. Her seminal book “Anatomy of the Spirit” showing the connectedness of the Hindu chakra system, the seven sacraments of the Christian faith and the Tree of Life from the Kabbalah was light years ahead of its time when it came out in 1997.
She was like every nun I had in Catholic school (but in a good way, not in a ‘throw chalk at you for talking in class” way). It’s one of my bucket list items to work with her personally but I’m not sure my overly sensitive self could handle it. I adore her. Every single thing I know about the energy system, I learned from Caroline Myss.
My good friend Joy Phillips has studied the archetype system showcased in the book “Sacred Contracts” (interesting and hella dense material!) and has been certified by Myss herself. So if you’d like to know more about how these archetypes show up in your life (without spending 700 years reading that book!), go check out Joy’s site. (I was not at all surprised to see the Detective archetype active in my energy – I’m always wondering what’s going on with stuff!)
And more recently, I’ve been drawn to a few people in the online business world. These are people who get my dollars and my attention.
I’ve mentioned him before but the quirky dude named James Altucher is on my must-follow list for good. He’s just amazing to me – done so many things, failed, done different things, written about them and he thinks in ways that keep me guessing. I’ve bought all his books, listened (for a while) to his podcast (not a fan of his odd co-host) and find him to be a truly on-the-edge mind. I don’t always agree with him but he helps keep my mind sharp. Do yourself a favor and follow him.
Tad Hargrave, from Marketing for Hippies knows how to sift down complicated marketing concepts into plain language. His recent article (a rant written nicely) shows what it’s like when you tell someone you’re going to show up to their event and then blow it off. it feels sucky and he tells you why and what to do about it if you’re the event presenter. (I’ve bought almost every product he has for sale – one of my best investments!)
So, that’s who I listen to and who have helped me get to where I am today (wherever that is!). Who are your g0-to peeps? Share in the comments, if you’d like.
So, how’s your business going?
