from Practically Intuitive Podcasts
Hi again and welcome back to the weekly Practically Intuitive podcast. This is Lisa from Practically Intuitive and I’m glad you’re listening in.
In these short weekly podcasts, I talk about all kinds of things in the intuitive world and how they might work for you in your own life.
I’ve got a sweet offer for you guys and I’ll tell you more about it near the end of the podcast.
What’s on tap for this week’s conversation?
Well, I’m reading a book called “The Street Smart Psychic’s Guide to getting a good reading” by Lisa Barretta and it sparked a thought – what does make for a good intuitive reading? If you’ve never had one, you might be unsure of what to even expect so I’m here to shed some light on it.
Even before I fully realized my skills in this arena, I loved getting readings. While I might not have taken everything that was said to heart, I did recognize some of the truths that came through. It certainly helps to show up with an open mind.
As I’ve experienced it and now offer it, an intuitive reading is like sitting before a table full of options and possibilities. It’s not telling you the future through a crystal ball or advising you to leave your partner and move to Italy, nice as that might sound. It’s showing you what could be for you. You always get to choose your actions. I just help you see things you might not realize are there.
How do I do this? Well, as a psychic / intuitive, I am able to perceive things using more than the five physical senses. As you might know, my strongest skill is clairaudience – the ability to hear Guides and Teachers as well as loved ones who have crossed over.
If you were to engage me for a reading, I show up, fully present to listen to you, hear what you may not be able to say, and then share what impressions I get as well as what your Guides and Teachers are saying. Some times a lot comes through and sometimes one simple shining truth comes and that’s enough.
In one of my recent readings, the person received guidance to stop asking for validation and signs and to accept that they know what they know. Their guides suggested they step into what is and stop wondering about whether it exists at all. In fact, I’d say that was the whole of the reading – accept that you can do this work (whatever that work might be) and stand in the knowing.
So, how do you know if you’ve gotten a “good” reading? I’d say that when you feel what they’ve said resonates with you, when you’ve come away with something you didn’t have when you started (ideas, thoughts, guidance, etc) or even a feeling of validation, then you’ve gotten a “good” reading.
So many of my readings offer that validation to others – basically an outside source (me, their Guides, whomever) saying “yep, what you’re getting is right on.”
To me, a good reading helps you find the next step. The action you take is entirely up to you. Your Guides can’t take it for you. Only you can do that work down here in the physical.
There are as many psychics and intuitives as there are books in all the bookstores in the world. The key is to find ones that resonate with you. I tend to do that by feeling – if I check out their site and feel comfortable and safe with them just from their words, I’ll tend to follow through with that. If there’s something about them or the site that puts me off, it’s a sign to me that we’re not on the same wavelength. Just not a match. That’s fine. I’ve had readings that I considered not helpful and readings where I was able to take in what was given and really jump into action.
The not helpful ones were often at psychic fairs where there’s lots of noise and commotion and I couldn’t really take in what they were saying and couldn’t remember anything to take action on.
Use your discernment and trust when seeking someone to read for you. Remember that not only are they are dipping in to your energy but you are dipping in to theirs. Make sure you’re comfortable with the dipping!
I’d love to hear your comments on what makes a good intuitive reading for you – please feel free to post them on the blog.
And now, the big September announcment!
I’m putting my E-book “Trust What You Get” on sale for the entire month at more than half off! You can now purchase it for just $22! It’s an immediate download so no waiting for the postman to deliver it.
It’s taken from my March teleclass by the same name and it gives you lots of information and steps to learn how to tune in to your intuition.
Once you start clearly hearing your own higher self and follow the guidance that comes from doing that, interesting shifts begin to happen. I live my life this way and I am still amazed at what shows up for me.
The link to purchase the Ebook is right on the post for this podcast – just enter the code SEPTEMBER and you’re good to go.
Remember that you can subscribe to these podcasts right through iTunes – just enter Practically Intuitive in the search box for podcasts and you’ll be magically whisked to the page where you can subscribe. I love this feature because I don’t even have to think about it – the podcasts are automatically downloaded for me.

Oh boy, I could write a lot on this topic. I've had readings that were flat out wrong, others that worried me, and once one that was so dead on about things I didn't even know about (yet) that I wish I could still find her! Lost in Cuban Miami somewhere.
As for the readings I do for other people, I am often surprised by how some information comes in with a shake of the head – we're not telling her, she has to figure that one out on her own or she's not ready for it yet (expected sometimes) – versus other times there is very specific advice – do not date that man, the right man is named ____. I really did not expect to get such very specific yes/no, but of course it depends upon who I'm hearing from. I do notice that specific advice is related to the immediate situation, not something in the far future.
Yep, I've noticed the same thing too Julie (re: your last sentence). I sometimes get questions from clients like, "Will I ever get married and if so, what's his name and where will we meet?" Sigh. I try to tell them that I don't often get information like that. Actually, I don't think I've ever received all of those answers for any one person.
Anyway, I think we often don't get information about far into the future because it's hard to predict, even for our guides. People have free will and choices every day of their lives and so as a result, a decision we make today can impact who we will (or won't) meet 6 months from now, for example.
The mark of a good reading – for me – is whether or not it gave some validation to things I already intuitively knew/felt and whether or not it brought positive change into my life. I had a reading from a guy a couple of years ago and he did the whole "rolling my eyes back into my head now to get deep, sekrit information" and well…he was dead wrong on everything. I left his place feeling like a fool that I'd spent $$ on something like that. I always feel happier and lighter after a good reading. Like my energetic vibration has increased a little.
Linds, I had to laugh at the " … deep sekrit information" part – the more artifice that goes with a reading, the less I trust it. Being an intuitive and a psychic isn't a big "otherworldly" deal (although it is kinda cool, I admit). It's a skill – one many people can bring through in their own life. (IMO) Good comment! Thanks!
I really enjoyed this podcast, because a friend just received a reading that blew her away and I'm sort of embarrassed to admit that I thought "B#$% S#$%" when she told me about it. I felt that the reading was the run of the mill reading that tells women what they want to hear without providing any true insight or guidance, which I think is important. I don’t know if this woman was a true intuitive or not, but so many things she told my friend raised my red flags, because I have very different beliefs. I’m proud that I keep my thoughts to myself, because my friend wasn’t ready to hear them and I wanted her to enjoy that high we all get after a reading. For me, it’s so important to keep in mind that I have free will and I go into a reading to gain guidance and to talk out what’s on my mind with trusted friends. I’m no longer interested in learning the future, because the future is constantly changing.
