By Lisa Wechtenhiser
I was talking with one of my wonderful clients today and she asked me this question: “If people know that there’s support and help from their Guides and the Universe, why don’t they take advantage of it?”
Why wouldn’t someone open up to the love, wisdom and company that they offer?
There are probably many, many reasons but the first one that comes to me is just plain fear.
*Being disappointed – what if I start to rely on them and then something big happens and they’re nowhere to be found?? I’ll feel like a fool for having trusted in something I can’t see AND I won’t have anyone to walk with me when the going gets tough.
*Asking for what I want and then it doesn’t show up.
* Walking a different path than those around me – what will people say if I tell them I can hear (feel, see, talk with) my Guides? Will someone put me in the nuthouse?
Just because we can sit here and say all that sounds silly and none of it happens (or I’d be blogging to you from ye olde nuthouse on the corner!), it still feels very real. It’s hard to trust in what you cannot see and know for sure. That need to know FOR SURE stops a lot of people right in their tracks.
It stops them from asking for help.
It stops them from receiving that help when they have asked.
Your Guides and Teachers can only help you if you ask. Period.
And, as I talked about a few posts ago, they cannot and will not play the part of your master. They are your partners. That means you have to step up and do your part by asking AND then taking action.
Don’t let fear stop you from stepping up and asking for help.
Don’t let the need to know WHY things happen as they do stop you from taking action on the guidance you get. Sometimes, you can only see the ‘why’ in hindsight (sometimes, not at all!) – the trick is just acting in faith. (I call it “Faith-Walking”)
The help is there.
ASK for it to reveal itself to you in whatever way is for your highest good.
And act on what shows up.
If you’ve never had a reading with an intuitive or a psychic or a medium, you might not be sure what to expect.
I’ve sampled many a reading in my day including:
- a session with renowned psychic Rev. Dr. Reed Brown of Arlington Metaphysical Chapel wherein he told me the name of one of my Guides in Spirit. Now, the guide was not your usual run of the mill Archangel (Sorry, Archangel Michael, no disrespect intended!) but the unusually named Vywamus. The funny thing is, on the way to the appointment, I asked Vy to come through Pastor Brown so I’d know he was real. And he did. Back then, I was shocked. Now? I just smile and say “Yeah”.
- healing sessions with several wonderful practitioners who used energy work to shift things around
- Aura healing sessions to remove cords of attachment
- Personal Coaches who openly used their intuitive skills to guide me
Each healer used their wonderful Creator-given skills to assist me in moving forward on my path. And each did it in a very unique way.
That’s the thing.
When you make an appointment with an intuitive, a healer, a psychic, a medium, etc. you really can’t know ahead of time what to expect.
The way I bring through messages is very different than the way my friend Kara does, or AJ or Francis.
Are all valid?
Here’s why: You will be drawn to working with someone who is uniquely positioned to give you the message, healing or guidance you need. I’ve seen that happen time and time again.
If you feel like you need some support on your path, how do you decide which way to go?
Let me offer some suggestions:
1) Ask your Guides and Teachers in Spirit to help you find someone with the set of skills that will best assist you. And then pay attention to who shows up – what websites come through that pique your interest. If a name of a reader or healer is mentioned out of the blue a couple times, you might want to look into that. It’s what we in the biz call “a message” (heh!).
2) Do you like the energetic ‘feel’ of a certain person? That’s a big big clue. I remember going to a lunchtime seminar many years ago and really liked the speaker. She happened to be a therapist who was lecturing about the benefits of humor in the workplace. I knew I wanted to work with her right that day. She became my therapist (and truly the person who kept me from going off the deep end) for many years.
3) Write to or email someone you’re considering working with and see how they respond. My letter to the crossfit gym last week elicited a response from the lovely Drea that made me feel warm and taken care of and really paved the way for me to sign up for the appointment. It was a big sign that I was moving in the right direction. If you receive a response that makes you feel that way, take action. It (and they) showed up to help you move forward.
What’s been your best way of knowing who can help you? A feeling? A recommendation? A nudge? Let us know in the comments below.
This week, my Guides and Teachers took this opportunity to come through (right at podcast time, too! What a coincidence, eh?? heh) and share some wisdom with you. This is the first time the Guides have joined me in a podcast – I think it turned out pretty well!
The review of “Trust What You Get” is over at Patricia’s site: Patricia’s Wisdom.

Welcome Welcome Welcome! This is Lisa from Practically Intuitive and this is my podcast where I chat about things intuitive and practical.
Don’t forget that my E-book “Trust What You Get” is on sale all this month for more than half off. Patricia, of Patricia’s Wisdom won the ebook in a contest last month and did a thorough review of it on her site. If you’re wondering how it can help you, check the link out. I’ll put it on the post with this podcast.
She said “This book does what it proposed to do and with humor and interesting examples and stories. I liked that the book was not 300 pages and much more plain spoken. I think the author must have a twinkle in her eye at all times and certainly a welcoming smile. I trust what she has to say.”
Yes, I’m pretty twinkly, I’d like to think! Thanks, Patricia for the kind review.
So, what shall we talk about today? I’ve got about thirty topics dancing in my head but I’m getting the nudge to toss it out to my Guides and Teachers who wish to come through with some advice and suggestions for those who want to bring their intuitive skills more into their life in a real kind of way.
As you may know, I am quite adept at hearing Guides and Teachers (yours and my own) as if they were speaking to me. When they speak, it’s as one unified voice unless they are called upon to come out individually. Sometimes they sound formal, sometimes goofy but always with wisdom to share and guidance to act upon.
Note that these are my own Guides and Teachers speaking. Your team may connect to you in very different ways – perhaps through a knowing, or a feeling or a picture in your mind’s eye. It’s all good. Whatever works, right?
Okay, let’s chat with my Guides:
“Thank you Lisa for the introduction. Your audience is pretty well aware of the work we do with them and a good many of those listening now are able to communicate with their team easily.
For those that cannot, let us say we are all closer than you think and our guidance comes through in ways you might not even be aware of. It is the intention – yours, specifically, to work with us that allows that channel to be strong and clear. If you are in the group who cannot yet hear/see/feel your own guides, we suggest clarifying your intent to do so and look for ways that guidance comes though for you.
If you are already in contact with your guides, know that intention can help you as well. Choose to take it to a different level and use that connection in every possible circumstance you can. While you might not act on the guidance that comes through, it reminds you that many options exist each with their own lessons and karma.
Do not allow yourselves to be boxed into thinking that guidance comes in just one way or that you cannot hear it at all. If the intent to connect is there, we use whatever means necessary to do so including songs, cards, words from others not directly meant for you – we have much at our disposal to do this so you see it is not impossible to receive the guidance but you have to be willing to accept it. Mind you, accepting is not agreement – you are always free to choose other actions. But to be wiling to hear it, and allow it into your menu of options helps open the door for greater intuition.
We know that it is difficult to go on such blind faith that you WILL receive guidance. Everyone seems to want irrefutable truths and that we cannot provide because how things turn out all depend on the choices you make and the actions you take down there in the physical. Guidance does not come with guarantees any more than a clean bill of health signifies you’ll never get sick.
However, we can tell you that when you are open and available to the wisdom your higher self offers and that which comes from us, you will no longer need to search “out there” for your validation. It comes from within and that you can trust. Your higher self has the road map. Why drive down a street blindfolded when you have a co-pilot and a road map? Not to mention those of us hanging out with you who can see even further than the map shows? That’s a lot of support and assistance all there for you. Accept it, use it and watch the ways in which your life changes.
Thank you for listening. We continue to send you love and blessings from this side and are with you in all circumstances.”
You know, I never have a sense of what they will say when they ask to come through and speak. But it always ends up making sense to me and helps with a bit more of the puzzle.
I hope it was helpful to you – and if you want to know what specific words your Guides have for you, I’d love to help you hear them even more clearly in my Intuitive / Spirit Guide Reading sessions. Contact me check out the site under Readings & Healings to see what might be a fit for you.
Just a quick update for those who listened last week – I am down 6 pounds by changing my food choices entirely and it’s been so amazingly easy. When I asked my Guides what was different this time they said “You asked for help. So we helped!” I was very clear in my intention with them and asked my spirit for strength when I was faced with difficult situations and every single time, it showed up. I continue to be astonished at what happens when you ask with a true and sincere heart for help.

This week’s topic is Self-Authority and why there’s no such thing as a Permission Genie.
As I was mulling over what to talk about I thought back to when I first started doing something called “Coaching with Spirit Guides” where I’d take your weekly concerns to your Guides and bring through some action steps and ideas for you to take. A lovely idea, or so I thought. In practice, well, it turned out to be different.
I began to see a growing dependence by my clients on what the Guides and Teachers had to say. Each week, I’d get emails asking me “What do the Guides think about this thing or that thing” and it was as if they were waiting for some Permission Genie in the sky to take action. That was not the intent of the whole program but that’s how it seemed to evolve. I realized that I was fostering that dependence instead of assisting them in their own self-growth. I stopped offering that service and realized I needed to speak more openly about self-authority.
So, let’s speak about it, k?
You are your own permission genie. You are.
When you work with your Guides and teachers in spirit, YOU always get to decide what action yto take. They are there to offer suggestions, ideas, maybe point out some opportunities that you overlooked but they cannot – and will not – definitely tell you what to do. That gets in the way of your free will and that’s not something they do. Period.
One of most important reasons I wanted to share the information in my “Trust What You Get” class was so that you could learn how to bring down guidance you get and then decide for yourself how or even if you were going to put it into practice. It has to ring true for you. And if you’re not listening to your higher self, you’re not going to be able to tell what is true for you.
In one of the book reviews I wrote for Pathways magazine, I mentioned that when something doesn’t ring true for me – authentically true – I hear a sound sort of like someone’s banging pots and pans together.
I first heard it when I was in a class with my cousin to study Catholic doctrine. The priest teaching the class said that the only way you could speak with God was to come to church and be in the presence of the tabernacle on the altar. That is certainly what the Catholic church teaches but it is not what is authentically true for me. I can speak with God, The Universe, whomever I choose wherever I choose.
I trust what I know to be authentically true for me and I don’t need a priest or a president or a permission genie in the sky to tell me that.
And so it can be for you too. If you choose to work more closely with your Guides and Teachers, don’t put it on them to make decisions for you. They can’t do that. Only you can because you’re down here in the physical and they’re not. The action has to be done by you.
Further, though, learn to trust your Higher Self. It’s the most evolved part of your soul and shares wisdom and guidance from that perspective. Don’t assume that someone out there knows more about you and your path than your own higher self does.
Your Guides and Teachers can give you small clues, something to think about, ponder, or look at through another perspective so you can come to it yourself.
They will also support you in learning to work with your higher self so that your need to look outside that self for validation slowly falls away.
And that’s how learning to work in tandem with your Guides in a balanced way can assist you in your everyday life.
My Ebook, called “Trust What You Get” has lots of ways for you to start learning to trust your own higher self. Check out the free excerpt available on practicallyintuitive.com and you can also purchase the full version there as well.
Every Thursday during the month of August, I’ll be posting a contest for a free giveaway – so far we’ve given away a 25 minute session with Patricia at Wiseears.com and a copy of my Ebook. Check back on Thursday for this week’s giveaway. All you have to do is leave a comment and you’ll be entered to win!
That’s all for this week. Please feel free to post your comments about this podcast on the blog or on my Facebook page. And if there’s a particular topic you want me to cover, email me. I’m happy to add it into the list.
Have a wonderful week and remember: you are your own permission genie even if you don’t quite look like Barbara Eden! Bye for now!

I belong to a lovely community of Lightworkers on a political forum – from astrologers to distance healers to those who are just coming to understand what being a Lightworker means.
Someone suggested we participate in what’s called an “Angel Visit” where you welcome the angels to your house for a specified period of time with rituals and such. When the time period ends, you give the angels the names of three people who have requested a visit and send them on their way.
It’s kind of a neat idea and as you might imagine, I participated. There were guidelines to the ritual piece involving candles, envelopes full of requests for the angels, flowers and even an apple.
Maybe you’d be surprised (I was!) at how many people got hung up on the ritual pieces. They worried about being late to welcome the angels or not having anyone to send the angels to visit, or whether they could use a blue candle instead of the white. What about the apple? Could you use a pear instead?
Now, I’m a believer in guidelines. They are so helpful when learning a new skill. But when it comes to energetic work (all kinds) and co-creating with your Angels and Guides in Spirit, it all comes down to intention. Truly it does.
See, here’s the thing: There is NO JUDGEMENT on the plane where Guides, Teachers and Angels reside.
They will not care if you put out a coconut when the guidelines said apple. Nor will they care if you follow the guidelines to the letter or not at all. They are just guidelines.
What matters most is your intention in this kind of request. If you are asking for guidance on an important issue, know that it will be provided. You might not know the form the guidance will take, but it will show up. Could be in a song lyric, something another person says to you in passing, a book that falls at your feet … it WILL show up if you’re paying attention.
All the other pieces of the ritual? It’s my feeling that they’re there to make us feel like we are “doing something” to call in that energy. Is it nice? Yes. Is it necessary to receive guidance? No.
When you are working with those in Spirit, there is no “one size fits all” way of doing it. If the request comes from your heart, it won’t matter how you say it. They’ll hear you.
They really will.
Can you hear or feel your Guides and Teachers? If you are having trouble understanding the messages you’re getting, I’d be happy to help decode them and teach you how to do it yourself! Email me and let’s talk!
“Be who you are.” – I remember giving that advice to an ex-boyfriend during a job hunt. He was padding his resume with all kinds of things that he had not yet done and I said that he would end up with a job where neither he nor his employer would be happy with the match. When he would go to interviews, I’d kiss him goodbye and say “Be who you are. It’s enough.”
That was many years ago but that story floats back into my head now and again as I think about what it truly means to “be who you are” whether it’s for a job interview or just hanging around the house. We all wear so many masks, don’t we? Most of those masks, I think, come from being told that we are not good enough, smart enough, attractive enough ad nauseum. So, we put on our biggest smiles even as our hearts are breaking or cry when we’re mad because we don’t know how to express anger. After a while, it’s difficult to know what’s a mask and what is you just “being who you are”.
I knew this was something for me to really look at when part of Andrea’s latest course “Inspired Income Mastery” was titled (wait for it!) “Be who you are.” Yeah, that was a callout from the Universe for me precisely because of that earlier comment to the ex-BF. What happens if you take all the masks off and show your real, true self to the world? Is that thought scary to you? It is to me. Why? Because we are vulnerable and that makes us open to hurt. On the flip side, though, it also frees us up to do our work in this world in the way that only we can do it.
And it’s really a matter of allowing that to shine through. Without knowing what will happen and without fear of whatever does. I’m taking my mask off and unleashing my inner High Priestess self. I have no idea how that will float with those in my life and you know what? I cannot control that. I can only control what *I* do. (I suspect most of them see that inner HP, anyway! heh) Acknowledging who you truly are, underneath it all, is both scary and cool. And, as I am coming to learn, the only way to be.
Are you brave enough to unleash your inner self?
I’d love to work with you to clear away some of the stuff that’s in the way (cutting cords of energetic attachment is one way to do it) and open up space for your own authentic self to shine! Email me and let’s talk about some ways to do that.
