Recognize those lyrics? They’re from a song called “Dead Man’s Party” by Oingo Boingo. It’s a fun, giddy 80s song (despite the subject matter!) and I’ve danced around the house to it lots of times.
Listening to it brought to mind one of my friends who recently lost a family member. She asked me if this person was okay. I mean, yes, they’re dead and all but are they okay??
Here’s the answer now and for all time:
“Breathing death into someone’s aura” – that’s some imagery for you, right there.
It’s a turn of phrase used by David Neagle in his course “Art of Success II” as he’s talking about why one needs to stop gossiping.
Now, we all know that gossiping is a crap thing to do and we all still do it. (I admit it. I do it, too.) Yet, as a highly conscious person (or someone striving to be highly conscious), it’s one of those habits that needs to stop.
You really ARE “breathing death into someone’s aura” – that is a perfect explanation of what gossiping is on an energetic level.
From my perspective, gossip energy feels like “I need to bring you down so I feel better about myself”. It’s low vibration because it comes from a place of feeling “not good enough” (for what or whom is a question only you can answer). It’s just a way to make yourself feel better about what’s going on inside you – a way to manage the feelings you don’t quite want to deal with. So you shoot them out the side in the form of gossip and you feel momentarily better.

I’m posting this article written by one of my teachers, David Neagle. In it, he mentions the Law of Polarity, one of the Laws by which the Universe operates in an orderly fashion. I talk about this Law sometimes in my work and liked his explanation of it (below).

Manifest Your Prosperous Idea
If you’ve been following this goal-setting series, you’ve identified what needs to leave and come into your environment, and you’ve made an unwavering commitment to your goal.
You are now ready for it to manifest.
Get Emotionally Involved
To start moving your idea from the nonphysical to the physical, you have to become emotionally involved in it.
Imagine how your project will feel when it comes to fruition. Think about it all the time. Fan your desire for it into a white-hot flame.
Why is that important?
Emotions are like the engines behind our thoughts, which by themselves are neutral.
When you imbue your idea or any thought with emotion, you send it zinging through time and space, and the Universe starts bringing you what you need to manifest it.
If you stay emotionally connected to your project, it will manifest quickly.
If you fall into doubt and recant on being willing and able, you return to ground zero. You have to start again.
I know…if you’ve never consciously manifested something before, it is difficult to keep the faith.
Just remember that the moment you had the idea it came into existence along with the means to manifest it.
That’s the promise of the Law of Polarity.
Instant Manifestation and the Law of Polarity
The Law of Polarity states that everything in the universe has an opposite. There would be no inside to a room without an outside. Every up has a down and every down has an up.
Not only does everything have an opposite, but it is equal and opposite. If it’s three feet from the floor to the top of the table, it’s three feet from the top of the table down to the floor.
The opposite of a question is its answer, so when you have an idea, the way to manifest that idea is also present. They’re like two different sides of the same coin.
People think that wealth and poverty are two different things, but they’re not. They’re just opposite sides.
This is true for any ill effect you’re experiencing, whether it is debt or lack of prospects, sales or money.
If you’re experiencing the opposite of the thing that you want, that thing is also around you. You just don’t perceive it.
This is why instant manifestation is real. Once you can perceive it, it’s already there.
Bang! It comes right into your field of vision. You have it. It’s yours.
Yes, you do have to shift your perception in order to see ~ and experience ~ the other side of the coin.

One of the things most important to me is self-authority. The more I engaged with guides and teachers, the more I see how necessary it is for us all to take responsibility for what shows up in our life, knowing that on some level we called it to us. We might have done it unconsciously but it comes just the same. From a place of ownership, you can effect real and lasing change.
So, when I talk about self-authority, I’m speaking about the choices you make in your life about what to believe in, what actions to take based on those beliefs and the knowledge that you can significantly affect what shows up for you by claiming ownership of your life.
How do you get there, though, if you’ve been putting your faith in some thing, some one outside yourself for a good part of your life?
If you’ve been seeking validation for your choices from your parents, teachers, spouse – how do you begin to work toward that self-authority?
First, you have to see the value in doing so.
There’s lots of value in owning your own ideas, desires and thoughts. Most importantly, you increase the chances of getting them when you own them big time. Wayne Gretzky once said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” And that applies here as well. You will never get what you wish if you don’t first put it out there – to your spouse, to the Universe. You have to claim it and bring it into consciousness. It also reinforces the idea that you get to decide what you want in your life. Stuff doesn’t just happen to us. Really. It doesn’t. Whether you bring it into your life consciously or from a deeply buried place you don’t even know exists, you’re actively deciding what shows up for you each and every day. Make what shows up a reflection of what you truly want.
Second, understand that with great power comes great responsibility.
Once you know you have the power to receive what you want, you need to be much more discerning about what you put out there.
For example, let’s say you share with your spouse or partner that you’ve always wanted to be a teacher. You’re not even sure what you want to teach but you know that desire has always been in you. They ask you how you plan to make that a reality. You shrug. (Seriously, you just claimed it! Why do you have to know what to do with it?? J) A week later your partner asks again ‘”thought anymore about what you want to do with that teaching thing?” “no,” you respond and quit asking me about it, you think.
That’s the thing – when you claim something and put it out to the Universe, forces start coming together to help you get it.
That naggy spouse? Part of those forces. They remind you that you claimed it and are helping move you to the next place. Silently thank them for helping keep you on track even if the way they do it feels crappy.
Begin to move toward what you claimed – in the case of a teacher, that may be researching online certification classes or looking for a volunteer position you can do to get some experience.
The skies are not immediately going to part and bestow upon you the perfect teaching position where you’ll make a buttload of money and love every second. That’d be cool but it ain’t gonna happen. The lesson is in the journey to get there.
If you claim it, you are telling the Universe that it’s important to you.
Do that with consciousness and intention, though, because your Guides start getting things moving and shaking so that you can realize this desire. Be sure it’s something that feels right for you.
Bottom line: self-authority is really about what you want and what shows up in your life. It’s also about how you discern what is true for you versus what you’re told is true. As you develop and trust that inner knower, you are able to make clearer decisions and your life will be a much better fit for you.
As you go through your day, give some thought to what is showing up for you and if it’s something you want in your life. If it’s not, how can you claim your own authority and ask for something different? Even just allowing the idea that you get to choose a different outcome is empowering! Try it and see!

Lisa: Jodi, can you tell the Practically Intuitive readers a bit about yourself?
Jodi: Sure! I am an inspirational writer. (I still pinch myself when I write that because it’s such a dream come true.) I am definitely evidence that our lives can change drastically once we make our minds up and begin to leap toward our dreams. I write the blog Soul Speak, and I am so grateful for the loving community there.
Lisa What inspired you to create the “Coming Back to Life” E-course?
Jodi: I was given a helping hand when I needed it so desperately, and this course is my way of offering my own hand to anyone else who is stuck and needing to wake up to their own life.
Just two years ago, I was in a very different place. I definitely wasn’t awake. I was feeling lost and numb and completely disconnected from my soul and from all of life. Like so many of us, I was living my life on auto-pilot. I was alive in the sense that my body was functioning – my heart was beating, and I was getting up each day and going to work, but I wasn’t REALLY living. I was just going through the motions – sleepwalking through life – and I wasn’t even aware of it.
And it’s not like this numbing out happened overnight – it happened gradually over a period of many years. Throughout my life, when something or someone hurt me, it felt like a little part of me left. I’ve always been a sensitive soul, and sometimes it was just easier to retreat rather than feel the pain. I also have lived most of my life feeling afraid and stepping back rather than leaping when I was called to take a chance.
Also, I had spent several years in survival mode – struggling to get by financially, and was numb and needed to wake up and start living, I would’ve seen this as frivolous and not a great way to make sure all the bills were paid. So all of these pains and fears and struggles piled up on top of each other – creating a dark cloud over my heart. It was just easier to go to sleep and not think about it or feel any of it.
Two years ago, all of the struggles in my life came to a head – my husband and I had to move under very stressful and surprising circumstances, we were having a hard time staying passionate about our struggling gift business, we were drowning in bills with no light that we could see at the end of the tunnel, and we had just lost two people who meant a lot to us. So we were grieving and trying to put our life back together at the same time. All I wanted to do was crawl into my bed, pull the covers up, and wake up when everything was better again. I didn’t know how I was going to keep going.
That’s when the helping hand came. My loved one who had just died began communicating with me from the other side. He was my childhood sweetheart, and we hadn’t spoken in almost 20 years. I was definitely not open to this sort of thing at all, so it took an entire year of him sending me signs and me asking for more signs and on and on before we finally could get to work.
And once we did, my entire world opened up. He helped me see that being here on Earth is such a beautiful gift – a gift that we have chosen to be a part of. He helped me see that I wasn’t really living. And he helped me wake up and step back into my life again.
Our journey together has been life-changing for me. Everything changed – all because I now saw things through a different lens. I now know that my time here is precious, and I can choose to come back to life. We all can.
That’s why I created this course. I was given this beautiful gift, and I didn’t want to keep it all to myself. I want to be the helping hand for anyone who wanted to start living again and wasn’t sure how to do it.
Lisa: Wow! What a journey! And I love that you totally got the lessons there for you and turned it around and are sharing what you learned with others. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Can you tell us a bit about the E-course?
Jodi: The Coming Back to Life E-course begins on 10/1 and lasts for 6 weeks. It’s a helping hand, a set of concrete tools, and a loving support system all wrapped up into one heartfelt course!

That may sound harsh, but it’s the truth. I have read tons of self-help books throughout my life and was always disappointed when nothing changed. Well, it was because I simply read the book but didn’t apply any of the teachings to my own life. You have to make the choice to take action. You have to be so fed up with your current way of living that you are honestly ready to make a change.

I want them to really know that we have a choice – we truly don’t have to go through life simply going through the motions and just getting through the day. There is an entire universe out there that we are only just beginning to tap into. Our soul is connected to such a beautiful world – and waking up is the key to experiencing this way of life.

Today I’m going to talk about everyone’s most favorite topic – boundaries. What? It’s NOT your favorite? Truth be told, it’s not mine either. Still, being able to know your boundaries and understand why they are a crucial part of taking care of yourself is key to getting what you want and need.
Personal boundaries are the physical, emotional and mental limits we establish to protect ourselves from being manipulated, used, or violated by others. They allow us to separate who we are, and what we think and feel, from the thoughts and feelings of others
Well, that seems easy enough, I suppose and it makes sense. Unfortunately, many of us grow up with boundaries that have been stepped on, trampled over and just plain ignored by those around us – family, lovers, friends, children. And somehow, we begin to think that we either don’t deserve to have our own opinions or feelings or that others come before us when we consider what we want.
Take the young girl who has grown up seeing her dad bully her mom whenever her mom asked for what she needed. This girl gets the message that if you speak up, you’ll catch holy hell for it so she learns to go along to get along. She loses her metaphorical voice in the world. She also learns that it’s okay for someone else to shut her up. Can you see how this would affect so many areas of her life? She hasn’t been taught that it’s an essential life skill for her to speak up and own what she wants.
I was 24 when I moved out of my mom’s house and I got so much flak from my Italian family over my desire to do that. In my family, you stayed home until you either went away to college or got married. I was leaving just because I wanted to and that was not acceptable, according to my mom and grandparents. My therapist at the time made me repeat the mantra “it’s okay for me to do this” over and over and over. Essentially, I had to give myself permission to want this in the face of everyone telling me that it wasn’t okay. I did it but with an enormous amount of needless guilt for reasons I still don’t understand to this day.
And empaths, those who can directly experience the emotions of other people, face a particularly difficult time with boundaries. It’s hard to know what feelings belong to them and what belongs to other people. There’s a huge blurring of borders.
I know (often with amazing clarity) how my words and actions will directly affect another. And I’ve chosen not to speak up many, many times because I didn’t want to hurt someone.
Instead of allowing them to feel whatever they want and make their own choices, I’ve created this entire play in my head about what’s going to happen when I speak up.
So, not only am I not honoring my own boundaries by remaining silent, I’m not honoring their right to feel and act however they choose in response to my words.
Why is it so hard to ask for what we want? And to be able to say no to what we don’t want?
There are so many reasons, really. Much of it comes down to understanding that not only do we have the right to set our boundaries; we have the responsibility to do that. Boundaries are your way of claiming what you value.
If you don’t claim it, you will seek your self-worth in someone else’s opinion.
Let me say that again because it’s huge: If you do not claim the things you value and want in your life, you are giving that power away to others who will make those choices for you.
Is that what you really, truly want?
Your needs have just as much validity as anyone else’s needs.
Really they do. No matter what you’ve learned along the way, you matter just as much as everyone else.
Believe that. Because all else springs from that belief.
Now that you know how important it is to claim your desires, here’s a couple ways to start doing that right today:
1) Speak up even in situations that aren’t a big deal. If someone asks you what restaurant you’d like to go to and you don’t overly care, pick one anyway. This is just practice in speaking your preference out loud. When you see that you can own what you want with the small stuff, it helps build your confidence in asking for the bigger things.
2) Learn to say no nicely. And be truthful about it. If you don’t want to go to a family cookout, say “I’m not going to be able to come but thank you so much for the invitation.” Making up excuses just makes you feel bad for not being truthful and disrespects the other person. There are reasonable ways to say no thank you. Find them and use them in cases where it’s appropriate.
This is such a large topic that affects so many areas of our life that I’ve only been able to touch on it a bit here. But if you start with these small steps, you will see a difference immediately. You can’t not see it! And the more you do it, the more confidence you’ll have about speaking up. So when it gets to something big, you’ll be able to say what you want much easier.
Like learning how to work with your intuition, the time to practice it is when there’s nothing riding on the outcome, not when you’re in the weeds and have to make a life-changing decision. There’s no shame in starting right where you are. Just start.
