A Primer on Intuitive Readings – how to ask the right questions for the best guidance

By Lisa Wechtenhiser

Last night I did about 30 mini-readings over at the Practically Intuitive Facebook page. Whew! It was fun for me and I hope illuminating for those who got their questions answered.

In light of the free call AJ McClary and I will be doing on Sunday April 28th, I wanted to share a few ways you can get the most out of your intuitive readings (be they free mini-ones like last night’s Facebook fun or a paid one with me or another reader).

Do these things and don’t do these other things

Want a good intuitive reading? Do these three things

By Lisa Wechtenhiser

stop chasing wrong thingsI’ve had many, many (MANY!) intuitive readings in my life. Some were interesting and helpful. Some were interesting and not-so-helpful and some were downright wastes of time and money. It’s sort of the nature of the beast, you know? You pays your money and you takes your chances. 🙂

It is a good practice, however, to be clear what you are seeking when you book an intuitive reading (with me or any reader/healer) and have an intention for the work you will do with them. It is this focus and intention that sets the stage for the work you do together and what you carry forward after the session ends.

Suggestion Number One: Do research on the person with whom you want to work.

Podcast #51: What’s Simmering Inside You?

What goes on in your unconscious when you’re not paying attention?

Are there clues that you can pick up that things are about to bubble up?

Today’s podcast talks about clues you’re already getting that something is ready to come into your consciousness. Bring it out – with consciousness – and then act on it!

Hi everyone – this is Lisa from Practically Intuitive.com and welcome to the podcast.  I do these short little ones every other week on topics ranging from the woo-woo to the practical and all areas in between.  If you’ve got an idea or a topic you’d like me to bring up in one of these, drop me a note and let me know!

Just a reminder that I’ll be shifting over to a fuller program to better help you navigate the shifts and changes in your life soon and will be stopping one-time readings.   I was going to stop  October 31st but since my birthday is right around the corner, I decided to start the new program when I start my new year!

So, the last day for you to purchase a one-time reading (either 30 minutes or 60) will be October 22nd.  These readings are especially good for when you have an important decision to make and need some input from your guides and teachers, or if you just need some support to know you’re moving in the right direction.  There is a lot that comes through in the time we talk and the great thing is that the calls are recorded and sent to you afterward so you can just be on the phone and take it all in!  If you want to book a reading before October 22nd, you can click the “Work with Me” link on my site and do it all right there.  You don’t have to get your reading before October 22nd but you do have to book it before then.

And now, on to today’s topic which is …. Well, I don’t know what it is, actually.  All week long I’ve been waiting for something to jump up and hit me and so far, no jumps, no hits.

It made me wonder what I have to say that isn’t yet ready to be said.  I’ve mentioned one or thirty times that I’ve kept journals all my life and when I go back and look at them, what usually pokes me is what I didn’t write about.

Sometimes feelings were too big for me to put into words and all I have are journal entries many months apart instead of a few days apart.

When it gets quiet inside me, I know that things are simmering but I often don’t know what things or why they’re simmering.

Have you ever had that experience of knowing that something was going on right underneath your consciousness but it eluded you?

And the more you tried to bring it out, the more it ran away.  Almost like a dream – the harder you try to remember, the more it disappears?

That sign, that inability to know what’s bubbling, tells me it’s something big.

What signs do you experience when you know a shift is underway?  Do you get quiet also? Or do you write more or talk more to your friends, thinking it out along with them?

We all have our patterns and part of living a life with consciousness is understanding your patterns and how to work with them.

For example, my husband sleeps a lot when something is bothering him.  If I notice that he’s napping quite a bit or going to bed really early, I know that it’s more than being physically tired.  Yet, when I ask him what’s up, he’ll say “nothing” because what’s up is buried deep in his unconscious.  All he knows is that he wants to sleep.  It’s possible he’s not ready or willing to deal with what he’s feeling.  And it’s times like this that he probably isn’t thrilled living with an intuitive because I always ask  if something is bothering him that he’s not talking about.

These patterns can tell you a lot about yourself or someone else if you pay attention to them on a consistent basis.

And maybe that’s what this podcast is about – paying attention to what goes on when you’re not paying attention.

That’s where the answers lie.

Caroline Myss has often posed the question “Where does your mind go when you’re not paying attention?”  She suggested we start tracking that because it shows what you are giving energy to.

Same principle here – what are you giving energy to that is right below your consciousness?

How do you begin to let it bubble up?

To start with you have to be aware that a pattern exists before you try to figure out what it means.  And that takes some self-reflection.  If you’re not naturally that way, it helps to write down some notes about what you’re feeling or doing so you can see a picture emerge.  If you have a friend or a partner who knows you well, perhaps you can ask them some of the things they notice that you do – like me noting the husband’s nap time.

Once you have an idea of what your particular pattern means, ask your higher self or your team of guides to bring the meaning of that pattern into your consciousness for processing.  It’s there to show you something and once you know that, figuring out what that something is gets a lot easier.

Don’t force it into a box of what you think it’s supposed to mean – let it come to you however it does.

Mine was an offhand comment someone made many years ago saying “When you’re not talking, something is out of whack!”  One of my early nicknames was Motor Mouth (and that surprises no one who knows me well) but this comment was said at the right time for it to pop into my consciousness that yeah, something IS going on and it’s showing up as me not wanting to engage with anyone.

Next, set the intention to notice when it happens and what’s going on around you.  That will give you a clue what kinds of things trigger that pattern and since you have the meaning already associated with it, you can get an instant diagnosis right from your own soul about what is going on deep inside you.

Just like learning to work with your intuition, this takes practice and trust.  It takes you observing a repetitive action and then opening up to the underlying meaning of that action.  Once you are able to get this down, you have honed your inner GPS to an even higher degree than before.  Look for it to give you feedback and then use that feedback to understand what’s happening in your life and what things you want to shift, change or remove altogether.

Doing this won’t solve all your problems but it will help you become more aware of your inner workings and when that comes into consciousness, that’s when change can happen.  For me, that quiet signal means I’m working on something big so I know to allow myself time to flesh it out, time to get quiet and space to prepare for what’s coming. It usually means a big breakthrough is right around the corner.

This week, allow yourself to notice the little signals your unconscious sends you. You don’t have to interpret them or know what to do with them. Just notice them.  The rest comes naturally.

Thanks for listening. I hope you have a wonderful week.  This is Lisa from PracticallyIntuitive.com.  Bye for now.

Hi everyone and welcome back to the Practically Intuitive Podcast.  This is Lisa from Practically Intuitive.com – always nice to have you listening in!

As I mentioned in the last podcast, changes are afoot at Practically Intuitive.  Within the next month or so, I’ll be discontinuing one-time readings and moving to a bigger way to support you.  I’ll still be calling in your Guides and Teachers, walking through the Akashic Records to look at your soul work and removing those cords of attachment but it will be as pieces of a larger process.  If you are interested in a single session, this month is the time to do that.

More information on my new program coming soon.  Stay tuned.

I also have a goodie I want to share with a lucky reader! A colleague of mine, Sarah Seidelmann, created a really cool app for your phone or ipad called “what the walrus knows” – it’s a way to connect more deeply with your animal totems as they show up in your life.  You can read more about it at followyourfeelgood.com.

Sarah’s graciously  given me a special secret code that unlocks “what the walrus knows” app  for one of you guys out there! All you have to do to enter the contest is leave a comment on the post for this podcast either about the topic or why you think this app would be a good fit for you.  I’ll choose the winner at random at the end of the week.

One of the things most important to me is self-authority.  The more I engaged with guides and teachers, the more I see how necessary it is for us all to take responsibility for what shows up in our life, knowing that on some level we called it to us.  We might have done it unconsciously but it comes just the same.  From a place of ownership, you can effect real and lasing change.

Not before.

So, when I talk about self-authority, I’m speaking about the choices you make in your life about what to believe in, what actions to take based on those beliefs and the knowledge that you can significantly affect what shows up for you by claiming ownership of your life.

How do you get there, though, if you’ve been putting your faith in some thing, some one outside yourself for a good part of your life?

If you’ve been seeking validation for your choices from your parents, teachers, spouse – how do you begin to work toward that self-authority?

First, you have to see the value in doing so.

There’s lots of value in owning your own ideas, desires and thoughts.  Most importantly,  you increase the chances of getting them when you own them big time.  Wayne Gretzky once said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” And that applies here as well.  You will never get what you wish if you don’t first put it out there – to your spouse, to the Universe.  You have to claim it and bring it into consciousness. It also reinforces the idea that you get to decide what you want in your life.  Stuff doesn’t just happen to us.  Really.  It doesn’t. Whether you bring it into your life consciously or from a deeply buried place you don’t even know exists, you’re actively deciding what shows up for you each and every day.  Make what shows up a reflection of what you truly want.

Second, understand that with great power comes great responsibility.

Once you know you have the power to receive what you want, you need to be much more discerning about what you put out there.

For example, let’s say you share with your spouse or partner that you’ve always wanted to be a teacher.  You’re not even sure what you want to teach but you know that desire has always been in you.  They ask you how you plan to make that a reality.  You shrug.  (Seriously, you just claimed it! Why do you have to know what to do with it?? J)  A week later your partner asks again ‘”thought anymore about what you want to do with that teaching thing?”  “no,” you respond and quit asking me about it, you think.

That’s the thing – when you claim something and put it out to the Universe, forces start coming together to help you get it.

That naggy spouse? Part of those forces.  They remind you that you claimed it and are helping move you to the next place.  Silently thank them for helping keep you on track even if the way they do it feels crappy.

Begin to move toward what you claimed – in the case of a teacher, that may be researching online certification classes or looking for a volunteer position you can do to get some experience.

The skies are not immediately going to part and bestow upon you the perfect teaching position where you’ll make a buttload of money and love every second.  That’d be cool but it ain’t gonna happen.  The lesson is in the journey to get there.

If you claim it, you are telling the Universe that it’s important to you.

Do that with consciousness and intention, though, because your Guides start getting things moving and shaking so that you can realize this desire. Be sure it’s something that feels right for you.

Bottom line: self-authority is really about what you want and what shows up in your life.  It’s also about how you discern what is true for you versus what you’re told is true.  As you develop and trust that inner knower, you are able to make clearer decisions and your life will be a much better fit for you.

As you go through your day, give some thought to what is showing up for you and if it’s something you want in your life.  If it’s not, how can you claim your own authority and ask for something different? Even just allowing the idea that you get to choose a different outcome is empowering!  Try it and see!

That’s all for this week.  If you have thoughts or comments about self-authority that you want to share, please come on over the Practically Intuitive.com and leave me a comment! This is Lisa from PI.com, have a lovely fall week! Bye for now.

Readings and healings and balance, OH MY!

If you’ve never had a reading with an intuitive or a psychic or a medium, you might not be sure what to expect.

I’ve sampled many a reading in my day including:

  • a session with renowned psychic Rev. Dr. Reed Brown of Arlington Metaphysical Chapel wherein he told me the name of one of my Guides in Spirit.  Now, the guide was not your usual run of the mill Archangel (Sorry, Archangel Michael, no disrespect intended!) but the unusually named Vywamus.  The funny thing is, on the way to the appointment, I asked Vy to come through Pastor Brown so I’d know he was real.  And he did.  Back then, I was shocked. Now? I just smile and say “Yeah”.
  • healing sessions with several wonderful practitioners who used energy work to shift things around
  •  Aura healing sessions to remove cords of attachment
  • Personal Coaches who openly used their intuitive skills to guide me

Each healer used their wonderful Creator-given skills to assist me in moving forward on my path.  And each did it in a very unique way.

That’s the thing.

When you make an appointment with an intuitive, a healer, a psychic, a medium, etc.  you really can’t know ahead of time what to expect.

The way I bring through messages is very different than the way my friend Kara does, or AJ or Francis.

Are all valid?

Here’s why: You will be drawn to working with someone who is uniquely positioned to give you the message, healing or guidance you need.  I’ve seen that happen time and time again.

If you feel like you need some support on your path, how do you decide which way to go?

Let me offer some suggestions:

1) Ask your Guides and Teachers in Spirit to help you find someone with the set of skills that will best assist you.  And then pay attention to who shows up – what websites come through that pique your interest.  If a name of a reader or healer is mentioned out of the blue a couple times, you might want to look into that.  It’s what we in the biz call “a message” (heh!).

2) Do you like the energetic ‘feel’ of a certain person? That’s a big big clue. I remember going to a lunchtime seminar many years ago and really liked the speaker.  She happened to be a therapist who was lecturing about the benefits of humor in the workplace.  I knew I wanted to work with her right that day.  She became my therapist (and truly the person who kept me from going off the deep end) for many years.

3) Write to or email someone you’re considering working with and see how they respond.  My letter to the crossfit gym last week elicited a response from the lovely Drea that made me feel warm and taken care of and really paved the way for me to sign up for the appointment.  It was a big sign that I was moving in the right direction.  If you receive a response that makes you feel that way, take action.  It (and they) showed up to help you move forward.

What’s been your best way of knowing who can help you? A feeling? A recommendation? A nudge? Let us know in the comments below.

Podcast #44: If you don’t want to hear the answer, don’t ask the question.

Hi and welcome to the Practically Intuitive podcast. This is Lisa from Practically Intuitive.com and I’m glad you’re hanging out with me.

In another episode of “As the Universe Turns”, I’ve been asked back to the former day job but this time just temporarily as I fill in for someone having surgery.  I’ll be there until the end of August and surprisingly, I’m really happy about going back.

I know. I know. Remember how I just about flew off the roof when it was time for me to leave? In the three months I’ve been gone, I’ve seen my sixteen year old doggie live through his last days, gone to workshops in Richmond Virginia and Scottsdale Arizona, created two new programs for my clients, taught two classes and was gifted with a puppy full of exuberance and energy.

This little introvert was surprised to learn just how much she needed and wanted the company of others.  For thirty years (give or take) my world was ordered by a day job.  And for better or worse, the people in those jobs gave me all the human interaction I could possibly want.

I longed for the peace and quiet of my creative space.  BroganDog’s company is lovely (some days!) and I do get to interact with others at the dog park but I still felt kind of lonely.   I came to learn that having those wonderful people in my life really filled me up.  It’s helped me realize that when I’m finished the six week stint there, I need to find ways to add this into my daily life in some way.  It’d be cool to find a place where I can do readings one day a week or something.  We’ll see what my Guides have in store for me!

So, that’s where I’ll be until summer’s end and happily so.  I will still be available in the evenings for appointments as I was before I went full-time.

In case you’ve noticed the up tick of posts on Practically Intuitive of late, it’s because I’m participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge where we write a post a day for all 31 days of July.  I’m mostly staying with the woo but have switched things up and written about my Grandfather and even put a few favorite pinterest pictures up just for grins.  It’s been a lot of fun and I’ve visited blogs I wouldn’t have known existed were it not for this challenge.  And, you get lots of content from the stuff rolling around in my head.  Aren’t you excited?   J

Today’s topic comes from something I heard Robert Ohotto say in his course “Discovering your destiny in the shadow. “

He said:  “Don’t go for a reading until you are ready to hear guidance.   Do you really want the truth or do you want your ego’s agenda puffed up through what someone else is going to tell you?”

Let me ask you this: Have you ever gotten an intuitive or psychic reading and were told something you didn’t like? Or something that riled you up?

Early on in my professional career, I spoke with someone  who was trying to decide if she should uproot her entire family and move across country to take classes at a very, very pricey university.  Her Guides told her that she had every single thing she needed right now to do the work of her soul.  She didn’t need to do all that moving because she was ready right now, right where she was.

Guess what? She did NOT want to hear that.  Not at all. Not one bit.

How do I know this? She wrote me the next day telling me what an unprofessional reading I had given her, how disappointed she was in the quality of my work and that she wanted a refund of her $30.

Since this was the first (and still only) time I’ve ever gotten an email like that, I was stunned and hurt.  Did I really suck? Were my readings that bad? If so, why had no one told me this?

As I stood crying in the shower (yes, I really am that dramatic), my Guides said this to me:  “She didn’t want to hear what came through.  She wanted to hear that she should move so she could force her family to do what she wanted under the guise of “it’s her calling. She must go!”  When she didn’t get that information and, in fact, was told that she can start now, she was called out on her underlying reason.  And she did not like being called out.”

This goes back to what Robert Ohotto said: are you getting a reading so that you can puff up your agenda?  If so, at least know that ahead of time, right? Entire into it with consciousness.

When guidance comes through (whether it’s from an intuitive reader, your friend who tells you crap you don’t want to hear or some other place), it’s going to be what you need on a soul level.  Not an ego level.  Guides do not resonate on that egoic plane.  So they can’t (and won’t) give you suggestions or advice that satisfies your ego.

If you receive some information that you don’t like, ask yourself what you reject about it.  Does it not fit with your idea of what should happen? Look into why that might be with an open mind. Ask your Guides to help you understand the guidance and see how it fits in your life.

The key here is the open mind – when you go for a reading, open yourself up to whatever comes through and understand that it’s coming through for a reason.  You always have the option of not acting on that guidance, of course.  I’ll bet that former client of mine ended up doing just what she wanted to do all along.  That’s fine – there are lessons whichever way you choose to go.

But don’t go fooling yourself when you pay good money for an intuitive reading.  There are reasons you felt drawn to one person or another and that’s because they are the best messenger for you at that time.  They become your surrogate intuition, giving you the wisdom and information that you haven’t yet learned to trust coming from your higher self or team of guides.

If you want to know the answer to a question, be sure you are ready for stuff you might not be so eager to hear.  Ask your ego to sit on the sidelines so you can really hear what’s coming through.  And if it stirs stuff up, that’s a good time to work with a coach who can help you through it.

If I were working on a longer term basis with the client I mentioned earlier, I would help her look at why the idea of being ready now (rather than spending six years and over $200,000 she didn’t have) scared her so much.  Because that’s what the deal was.  I knew it and I bet she did too, on some level.

Bottom line: Know what you’re asking your intuitive reader and why.  Know if your ego has an agenda and at least be aware of it when you go.  You can make better decisions, get better guidance and choose wisely by being conscious of this sort of thing.

That’s all for this week.  If you’re a fan of Practically Intuitive on Facebook, you’ll be updated when each new post is published.  Join in the fun and conversation over there and here on the blog! I welcome your thoughts!  Also, I’ve got 23 more days’ worth of posts so if you have any suggestions on what you’d like to know more about, email me!  I imagine by day 27 I’ll be posting Brogan pictures and LOLcats because my head is just plain empty!  So, help a chick, okay?

Have a wonderful week – this is Lisa from Practically Intuitive.com – bye for now!
